WASHINGTON, DC—Barbra Shapiro, the longtime owner and operator of the popular Adams Morgan establishment Millie & Al's Bar, has sold the 2,562-square foot property for $1.8 million or $703 per square foot. The buyer is a private investor who is currently in negotiations with a number of local and national tenants interested in entering the Adams Morgan submarket, according to Marcus & Millichap, which brokered the sale.
The property is zoned C-2-B and has a total developmental potential of up to 9,517 square-feet.
“This closing is an example of a trend happening across all of DC where long-time owner-operators are deciding to close their doors and capitalize on the strength of the current real estate market,” said Josh Feldman, associate vice president investments in Marcus & Millichap's Washington, DC office who marketed the property.
It was listed for sale on December 18th, 2015 and went under contract on January 30th. It closed its doors last month to the sorrow of the community.
Millie & Al's had been operating in Adams Morgan since 1963 when Barbra's father, Al Shapiro, opened it. It quickly became an integral part of the community and a stop on many an informal pub crawls thanks to its affordable drinks including its infamous Jell-O shots. It is also known for its “I met your mother at Millie & Al's” love stories and when the bar announced it would closing on April 2, Barbra Shapiro gave these couples a special call out.
“I'd love to personally invite anyone that has a special connection to the bar, especially all who met their husbands or wives here,” Shapiro said. “I know there have been hundreds of people who've met spouses here, and it would be great to see you all as a final hoorah.”
