IRVINE, CA—Admired for its villages, Irvine is the ideal place for Hoag's new healthcare village concept, allowing patients to access specialty care in one, convenient location, the healthcare company's SVP, real estate and facilities, Sanford Smith tells GlobeSt.com. Hoag Health Center Irvine celebrated its official grand opening recently, introducing the community to the latest innovative concept in comprehensive care: the “healthcare village.” The project provides an array of healthcare services such as women's health and cancer care that complement the acute-care services across the street at Hoag Hospital Irvine.
We spoke exclusively with Smith about the company's decision to expand here, how the healthcare-village concept works in Irvine and where else in Southern California it might work.
GlobeSt.com: Why did you decide to expand in Irvine?
Smith: Irvine is a vibrant and rapidly growing community. In addition, the oldest residential village is now 50 years old, and we knew our services needed to expand to meet the needs of this aging and growing population. Located across the street from Hoag Hospital Irvine, which opened in this community six years ago, Hoag Health Center Irvine at Sand Canyon is more than a collection of medical-office buildings; it is an extension of Hoag and our expansive specialized services.
GlobeSt.com: How does the healthcare-village concept work in this market?
Smith: Irvine, as a master planned community, is admired for its villages—well-designed enclaves—and celebrated for its excellent quality of life. Hoag drew inspiration from this community-oriented approach and developed a healthcare village allowing patients to access specialty care in one, convenient location. From cancer care, women's services, neurosciences and heart and vascular programs to advanced imaging, primary care and urgent care, Hoag Health Center Irvine provides the community with world-class healthcare. By providing patient care coordinators to assist patients in their journey, we offer a patient experience that is highly personalized, simplified and comprehensive.
GlobeSt.com: In what other Southern California markets might this concept work?
Smith: In many communities, healthcare has typically evolved around their local hospital in a highly fragmented manner, which creates confusion and anxiety for the patients who are forced to navigate the complexities of the healthcare system. As physician practice patterns change, the ability to concentrate services and deliver higher patient value will become increasingly important. Hoag's healthcare-village concept could become an important redevelopment opportunity throughout communities across the country.
GlobeSt.com: What else should our readers know about this expansion?
Smith: Expanding Hoag's services in Irvine was designed with the intention to meet and anticipate the community's needs. It is here for residents if they should become sick, but more importantly, it's to keep them healthy. The project was developed with our partners, Pacific Medical Buildings, who led the entitlement, financing and development process.
