LOS ANGELES—West Hollywood Housing Corp. has officially opened Movietown Square, a 77-unit affordable housing community that serves seniors over the age of 62 that make 30% to 60% of the median area income. The property is interesting because West Hollywood Housing Corp. worked with developer Avalon Bay to create a senior-affordable housing community within the market-rate community Avalon West Hollywood, which offers quality amenities and brings the communities together.
“I believe this is the future of how to live: where people of all ages and backgrounds live together and help each other,” Jeff Larsen, principal at MVE + Partners, said at the opening on the project, which welcomed local officials like West Hollywood Mayor Lauren Meister; Genevieve Morrill, Executive Director of West Hollywood Chamber; Councilmember John Duran of the City of West Hollywood; and Abbe Land, former Mayor of the City of West Hollywood. “Today shows how brilliant that jewel shines. The benefits and opportunities for residents of Movietown are equal to everyone else's, and I'm really proud to be a part of that.” MVE, AvalonBay and the WHCHC collaborated on the design to create an affordable property that was equal in quality to a market-rate apartment building.
While supplying the market with much-needed affordable housing, the project also serves the surrounding community with Movietown Mews, a pedestrian walkway with neighborhood-friendly retail amenities. Movietown will enhance the existing urban fabric at street level with the addition of neighborhood serving retail designed to activate the surrounding streetscape. It will also help knit together existing gaps in the neighborhood pedestrian experience,” said Larsen. “The pedestrian street that invites the community deep into the courtyards, thus creating pedestrian blocks to help break down the overall scale of the development within the context of the community.
Upon opening the community is already fully leased. The property also uniquely serves Russian immigrants, which make up the majority of the areas immigrant population. For that reason, the property will include amenities, like Russian TV, that uniquely serve this population.
