HOUSTON—Specialty mattress retailer, Mattress Firm, recently consolidated two corporate locations into one building in southwest Houston. The 130,000-square-foot space, aptly named, “BEDQuarters,” is located at 10201 S. Main St. The decision to consolidate headquarters was spurred by Mattress Firm's fast-paced growth, along with a strategy to align the company's brand identity with its organizational culture.

Architecture and interior design firm tvsdesign partnered with Mattress Firm to design the headquarters building. Each design feature was deliberately chosen to reflect Mattress Firm's culture.

The building features a statement lobby with bed coils adorning the front desk, cloud-like pendants hanging from the ceiling and wayfinding signage inspired by the company's Comfort by Color theme. Numerous collaboration spaces include a coffee shop and an on-site café.

“Areas create organic opportunities for staff to enjoy their work alongside colleagues, creating the kind of culture Mattress Firm already has, one that prioritizes the well-being of their people,” said Janet Simpson, tvsdesign president.

Before beginning the project, tvsdesign and Mattress Firm embarked on an intense discovery phase, in which 300 employees provided feedback on what they would like to see in the new corporate campus based on space requirements, work habits, culture and amenities.

“Mattress Firm's intentional approach to discovering what their associates wanted in this new workplace was essential to this project's success,” said Simpson. “We began the project with a 10-week 'vision' phase to get to know their culture firsthand, and the final product is a clear reflection of Mattress Firm's dedication to growth.”

That feedback guided tvsdesign in creating a modern workspace with ample amenities that support the company's goal of continuing to attract top talent. Staff can enjoy ping pong tables, a library, indoor swings, arcade games, nap rooms and even free soft serve ice cream 24/7.

“Collaboration was a key theme throughout this project's lifecycle. From the very beginning Mattress Firm emphasized the importance of incorporating employee input to create something that truly reflects their internal culture and future growth,” Simpson tells GlobeSt.com. “The result is a modern, energetic workplace that inspires productivity with a fun-loving spirit.”

Project planning and visioning began only a year before Mattress Firm associates moved into the space.

“Our new BEDQuarters is a celebration of our brand and encompasses the culture our employees have created,” said Karrie Forbes, COO of Mattress Firm. “The progressive design of the space is meant to inspire creativity while also increasing productivity. As our company continues to evolve and grow, our new space leaves plenty of room for creativity and collaboration to lead the way.”

Founded in 1986, Houston-based Mattress Firm is the nation's first and only border-to-border, coast-to-coast specialty bedding retailer.
