Port of Long Beach

The Port of Long Beach has been named the Best North American Seaport at the Asian Freight, Logistics and Supply Chain Awards hosted by Asia Cargo News. This is the third year in a row that the port has earned the designation. In the last several years, the Port of Long Beach has made an aggressive effort to modernize and better serve customers to stay competitive with ports around the globe, and this award acknowledges the success of those efforts, according to the port.

“It is an honor to be recognized by the industry for our efforts to consistently provide our customers with exceptional customer service,” Lee Peterson of the Port of Long Beach tells GlobeSt.com. “We are building the Green Port of the Future, investing $4 billion this decade in the most advanced and modern facilities of any seaport in the country. We are constantly evolving to serve the industry and stay competitive.”

Much of the port's recent modernization efforts are focused on evolving with the changing shipping industry while continuing to provide best-in-class service. Some of the major changes include digging out the terminals to accommodate larger ships, including the Benjamin Franklin, which was welcomed to the port last year, as well as updating the surrounding infrastructure. The port is in the midst of widening the Gerald Desmond Bridge to ease traffic in and out of the port and updating the terminals. Additionally, the Port of Long Beach has partnered with the community on sustainability efforts to make a green port.

While these efforts no doubt helped the port to win the award, they aren't the only factor. The Port of Long Beach has won the prestigious award 19 times in the last 22 years. It is one of the largest ports in the world and a gateway for trans-Pacific trade. It handles $180 billion in trade each year.

The Port of Long Beach is committed to continuing to grow and modernize. While Peterson did not tell us any specific details about future modernization efforts, he said that the customer service will remain central to any improvements. “Our goal is simply to not only meet the needs of customers, but to exceed their expectations,” adds Lee about the Port's future plans.
