NEW YORK CITY- New York State officials have pressed pause on all eviction proceedings indefinitely amid the Coronavirus outbreak, also known as COVID-19, according to a memo from the state's Chief Administrative Judge Lawrence Marks, which took effect at the start of the week.
Tenant advocates and elected officials had introduced legislation to enact a moratorium to halt evictions in the face of the coronavirus outbreak, arguing that evictions would increase homelessness and thus worsen the spread of COVID-19.
A coalition of 29 landlords pledged not to execute eviction warrants for 90 days. The court system had issued a one-week moratorium in New York City, which had lead to the landlord-guarantee.
