Winter's coming on, people will get packed together, and Covid-19 is still the third largest cause of death in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As the virus is airborne, HVAC technology remains an important consideration for commercial real estate.

Applied UV, which "develops and acquires proprietary infection prevention and control technology in the healthcare, commercial & public venue, food processing/storage, cannabis, and education, vertical markets," according to company press release, has engaged Canon Virginia to provide "strategic manufacturing and related services."

"Over the past three years, supply chain and logistics disruptions have impacted operations for companies globally, so consolidating and bringing our manufacturing processes on shore with one company was a top priority," said Max Munn, president and director of Applied UV.

Supply chain and the resulting manufacturing issues have been an ongoing broad problem for many companies.

"Canon Virginia produces new products using advanced manufacturing methodologies while also serving as a factory service center providing expert customer service in the repair and refurbishment of Canon products," the release said. "Canon Virginia's manufacturing services extend to injection mold making, contract manufacturing, medical contract manufacturing and aftermarket services."

Though the agreement, Canon Virginia will become the "primary manufacturer, assembler and logistical authority for Applied UV's suite of air purification solutions."

As the name might suggest, the company's overall focus is on using ultraviolet light to destroy pathogens. More specifically, it uses ultraviolet-C, or UV-C, which is a particular part of ultraviolet wavelengths that disrupts the DNA of microorganisms, leaving them unable to perform functions to keep themselves alive.

Applied UV has two subsidiaries: SteriLumen and Munn Works. SteriLumen had a portfolio of air purifier and surface disinfectant systems. Its "patented air purification and disinfectant technology to effectively remove respiratory and other infectious viruses, mold, bacteria, allergens and other pathogens."

Munn Works makes mirrors and case goods for hotels and residences and isn't specifically in the air or surface purification business. The company's Mount Vernon, NY headquarters provides domestic manufacturing for mirrors; a Brooklyn satellite factory makes case goods and metal works.

The company claims such clients as Kaiser Permanente, NY Health+Hospitals, Baptist Health South Florida, Boston Red Sox's Fenway Park, JetBlue Park, France's Palace of Versailles, Invited Clubs, Whole Foods, Del Monte Foods, and the US Department of Veterans Affairs.
