New York City is another step closer to starting the construction on another five-figure home project. This time, the City Planning Commission has voted in favor of the OneLIC Neighborhood Plan.

The rezoning initiative would deliver nearly 14,700 new homes to Long Island City, with about 4,300 units required to be set aside as permanently affordable. The affordable homes will be enough to shelter around 10,000 residents, according to a statement from Mayor Eric Adams.

Additionally, OneLIC would create more than 3.5 million square feet of industrial and commercial space, expected to result in roughly 14,000 new jobs in the process.

The boundaries of the plan would include 39th Avenue between 21st Street and 23rd Street, as well as East River waterfront to Crescent Street and Queens Plaza North to 47th Avenue, the city said.

“Long Island City is one of New York City’s most bustling neighborhoods, but parts of it are held back by a lack of housing or economic opportunities. With today’s vote, we’re one step closer to changing that,” DCP Director and CPC Chair Daniel Garodnick said in a statement.

“The OneLIC Neighborhood Plan updates zoning for new homes and jobs and makes investments in the public realm to create a more equitable, lively, and prosperous community. Thanks to the City Planning Commissioners for their support.”

OneLIC marks the third major housing project that the city has moved forward with in the past month. It started with Midtown South, which aims to deliver roughly 9,700 homes in Manhattan. The initiative has already passed the New York City Council. Also, in August, the CPC voted to approve the Jamaica Neighborhood Plan, which would bring 12,000 new homes to Queens.

According to Adams, his administration has preserved, built or planned more than 426,000 homes for NYC since taking office.

Both OneLIC and the Jamaica Neighborhood Plan now just await review and final votes from the City Council.
