Across the country, both major metros and emerging markets saw stronger renter engagement, with apartment seekers comparing more options and acting faster when they found a good fit, according to RentCafe’s Q3 Renter Engagement Tracker. The Midwest drew particular attention, with 11 of the nation’s 30 most sought-after rental markets in the region, showing many of its so-called “hidden gem” cities are no longer a secret, as pointed out by RentCafe.

Cincinnati led the Midwest’s surge, climbing four spots from July through September. Page views rose 34%, favorites jumped 52% and saved searches increased 56% as renters sought more affordable options. Most engagement came from nearby Columbus, as well as Indianapolis and Chicago, helping Cincinnati surpass Washington, D.C., which had held the top spot for nearly a year.

Second-place Atlanta reflected a more thoughtful approach to apartment hunting, with saved searches up 13% while favorites fell 7%, suggesting renters are browsing more listings before committing. Atlanta moved up two spots, maintaining the top national ranking in favorites and fourth in saved searches. Engagement came primarily from New York City, as well as two Georgia cities: Sandy Springs and Marietta.

Kansas City, Missouri, ranked third, slipping one spot, as renters spent more time shortlisting apartments. Page views rose 50%, while both favorites and saved searches more than doubled, driven by interest from Kansas City, Overland Park, Kansas, Denver and Chicago.

Washington, D.C., now fourth, continues to attract strong interest, with page views up 16%, favorites up 21%, and saved searches up 29%. Renters focused on listings matching lifestyle needs, drawing traffic from Baltimore, New York City and Reston, Virginia.

Las Vegas rounded out the top five, buoyed by renters relocating for new homes and jobs. Page views rose 51%, favorites more than doubled and saved searches jumped 157%, driven by engagement from Los Angeles, New York City and Phoenix.

Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Long Beach and St. Paul filled out the remaining top 10. In Minneapolis, renters used filters to focus searches, keeping the city one of the Midwest’s most-watched despite a slight drop in browsing. Philadelphia maintained high engagement, with page views up 41% and favorites up 51%, attracting renters from New York City, Boston and Houston. Cleveland rose three spots, with page views up 34% and saved searches up 41%, drawing interest from Cleveland Heights, Columbus and Chicago. Long Beach broke into the top 10 for the first time this year, with page views up 64% and saved searches nearly doubling, fueled by interest from Los Angeles, Anaheim and San Diego. St. Paul rounded out the top 10, posting a 191% jump in saved searches as renters monitored new listings from Minneapolis, Chicago and Woodbury, Minnesota.

Eight new cities entered the top 30 renter engagement rankings this quarter as renters searched near major job centers, transit or emerging markets with more available rental options. Three are in the South, two in the Northeast, two in the West, and one in the Midwest. Leading the newcomers is Queens, New York, which jumped 16 spots. Dallas surged 25 positions, while San Francisco rose 23 spots and Seattle advanced 16 places, with saved searches up 39% and favorites up 12%.
