The nation’s capital takes the top spot on RentCafe’s analysis of the most livable cities in the United States, but the Midwest dominates the list.
According to the analysis, which evaluated 149 metro areas on 17 factors including cost of living, healthcare access and community engagement, Washington, D.C., leads the nation for quality of life, location and professional networking opportunities. Meanwhile, Midwestern cities such as Kansas City, Des Moines and Ann Arbor, Michigan, continue to stand out for affordability, strong communities and access to healthcare.
Climbing from seventh place last year, Washington tops the national ranking thanks to wellness initiatives, ongoing revitalization and professional networking opportunities. Residents enjoy more than 2,000 professional associations — twice the rate of the runner-up metro — alongside historic landmarks, abundant green spaces and diverse healthcare options. Washington leads the nation in both quality of life and location/community, appealing to young professionals, health-conscious residents and culture seekers.
Portland, Maine, ranks second, buoyed by a stable job market, income gains and a rich cultural and culinary scene. The metro offers access to top universities, extensive healthcare networks, farmers’ markets and organized sports programs. Portland ranks second for location and community and fifth for quality of life, making it ideal for active residents and food lovers seeking a balanced lifestyle.
Kansas City combines affordability, steady income growth and wellness-focused amenities to claim third place. Nearly all residents have access to fitness facilities, from 24-hour gyms to jogging paths in more than 200 parks. With a highly educated population, short commutes and strong community engagement, Kansas City appeals to go-getters looking for a balance of professional opportunity and recreation.
Des Moines slots fourth thanks to brief daily commutes, farm-fresh food access and a highly educated workforce integrated into insurance, finance and tech sectors. The metro’s location and community score reflect its accessibility, neighborhood connections and active social opportunities, making it attractive to health-conscious and budget-minded residents.
Ann Arbor, Michigan, rounds out the top five, ranking fourth for quality of life and 13th for location/community. The metro benefits from extensive healthcare access, outdoor recreation venues and abundant professional associations. Young professionals and lifelong learners can leverage local educational institutions and the strong 7% income growth to expand both career and social networks.
Rounding out the top 10, Albany, New York, draws residents with its active community, plentiful sports facilities and short commutes. Columbus, Ohio, offers wellness-focused initiatives, farm-to-table dining and diverse recreational options.
Asheville, North Carolina, shines with steady income growth, healthcare access and a vibrant social scene. Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, combines affordability with strong community engagement and minimal commuting stress, while Boise, Idaho, appeals to those seeking an outdoor-friendly lifestyle, abundant parks and healthy food access, along with a growing labor force.
