Brooklyn Defender Services has signed a 212,000-square-foot lease at Tishman Speyer's The Wheeler building in Downtown Brooklyn. In total, the public defense firm will operate six full floors at the site.
This will serve as the nonprofit's new headquarters, with the lease term coming out to 31 years. Currently, its main office and mailing address are listed at 177 Livingston Street nearby in Downtown. Brooklyn Defender also operates in two more Brooklyn offices, as well as a couple of locations in Queens. The firm plans to relocate its Downtown Brooklyn workforce to the building starting later this year.
Brooklyn Defender was represented by Newmark, with Tishman getting backing in-house from Megan Sheehan, as well as from CBRE.
"Signing this long-term lease marks a major investment in the future of our organization and the people who make this important work possible," Lisa Schreibersdorf, executive director of Brooklyn Defender, said in a statement.
"These new headquarters will allow us to provide an inspiring, collaborative and supportive environment for our staff, the people we serve and surrounding communities. This new space strengthens our ability to provide high-quality legal representation and the best possible outcomes for the people we serve for decades to come."
The Wheeler, which first delivered in 2020, is now fully leased thanks to the signing. The 15-story, 613,000-square-foot building offers large floor plates and an acre of outdoor space. The site at 422 Fulton Street also provides access to 13 subway lines.
Some other major signings at The Wheeler included St. Francis College taking more than 255,000 square feet in a relocation deal in 2022 and Brooklyn Prospect leasing 150,000 square feet last year.
