NEW YORK CITY—Healthcare has been front and center since Obamacare was enacted on March 23, 2010. The legislation put businesses on their ears as they tried to manage the dramatic changes and higher employer costs that were put into law. Yesterday I caught a short story on NBC news about how large-scale businesses are introducing telemedicine into their plans, and going so far as to install portable systems in the form of kiosks and “pods” in their office campuses.

The kiosks and pods are managed by a low-cost medical technician and equipped with the latest in remote video connectivity, clinical assessment scopes, tools and the like to effectively treat a patient as well as reimburse the physician via EMR technology (co-pay, reimbursement). Telemedicine is extremely convenient and easy for employees to access while remaining at work and receiving timely treatment for many medical issues.

These Pods are a bit “Jetson” for our baby boomers, and is a terrific application of new technologies and a creative approach to dealing with illness in the workplace.
