Cleveland-based Forest City Development’s is a few hurdles closer to breaking ground on a 1.6 million-sf, mixed-use development that incorporates the historic Emporium department store.

Tentatively anchored by a Bloomingdale’s and a 20-story hotel, the project recently won approvals from the city Redevelopment Agency Commission, Planning Commission and Recreation and Parks Commission. A series of hearings before the Board of Supervisors is next on the agenda.

The site is directly across Market Street from the Powell Street cable car turnaround and the adjoining Nordstrom-anchored San Francisco Shopping Centre. All told, the proposed development includes a 375,000-sf Bloomingdale’s, 500,000 sf of other retail, restaurant and entertainment, a nine-screen cinema with seating for 3,000 and a 350-room hotel.
