ORANGE COUNTY, CA-Residents and owners of commercial real estate projects here could suffer another round of rolling power blackouts if the weather gets unusually warm in the weeks ahead, a top public-utilities official says.Edward Aghjayan, head of the Anaheim Public Utilities Department, told leaders of about 100 public and private utilities meeting at the Anaheim Hilton and Towers that pockets of businesses and customers alike could have their power unilaterally cut if temperatures soar back to the levels of a few weeks ago. A private agency that manages the state’s power grid has the legal authority to institute such blackouts when high power usage threatens to make the grid collapse. The power outages that hit some office towers, businesses and homeowners earlier this month—when temperatures in some OC communities got close to 100 degrees–were caused by overloaded systems rather than regulatory action, Aghjayan says.Though weather forecasters don’t forsee any unusually hot weather in the near term, “I think we’ll all feel better around Oct. 1,” after autumn begins, he adds.
