PHOENIX-A local contractor has gotten lucky again with Indian gaming.

Kitchell Contractors has been selected as the design/builder for a new 146,000-sf casino for the Tuolumne Ban of Me-Wuk Indians near Sonora, a relatively small city in Central California. One of Phoenix’s largest contractors, the firm has built a handful of other Indian casinos over the past few years.

Work has already begun on the first phase of the Me-Wuk’s Black Oak Casino, a 20,000-sf pre-engineered building with a freestanding facade. It will contain 600 slot machines, six gaming tables, a central bar and restaurant.

Once the casino is established, construction will start on the second phase of the project. Phase two will be a two-story structure of about 126,000 sf. The first floor will feature the casino, a 175-seat coffee shop, 300-seat entertainment lounge, upscale restaurant and other amenities. The upper level will contain a children’s entertainment area, a 24-lane bowling and billiard center, fast-food restaurants and offices.

Las Vegas-based KGA Architecture will serve as the architect on the project, and the interior is being designed by Genesis Interior Design Concepts. Kitchell recently completed the Cliff Castle Casino for the Yavapai-Apache Nation in Arizona and the Paiute Resort Clubhouse for the Paiute Indians in Las Vegas.
