SAN JOSE, CA-In trade for legal indemnity with regard to its proposed 20,000-worker North Coyote Valley Campus, Cisco Systems has agreed to donate $3 million and raise another $97 million to preserve Silicon Valley open space.

The deal was cut with the Greenbelt Alliance and the Santa Clara County Open Space Authority, both of whom have been for allowing Cisco to “buy approval” of the $1.3 billion project. Environmentalists and other critics have said that the 688-acre campus will drive traffic and rent up in the area, which lies 11 miles south of downtown San Jose.

The deal stipulates that Cisco will help raise the funds in order to protect 45,000 acres in Santa Clara County and nearby lands. Eighty percent of the funds will go to the Santa Clara County Open Space Authority, with the remainder spent by a partnership consisting of Cisco, the Coyote Valley Research Park developers, the Open Space Authority and the Greenbelt Alliance.

The project heads before the San Jose City Council on Oct. 24.
