KANSAS CITY, MO – Another move in the Freight House District, between Crown Center and downtown, equates to relocation for an 80-year-old company and a transformation for the company’s former headquarters. Independent Electric Machinery Co. Inc. moved from 300 Southwest Boulevard, on the edge of the Freight House District, to a new facility nearby in Kansas City, KS.

Independent Electric moved into a new 40,000-sf structure on a three-acre site near Interstate 635 and Shawnee Drive. Construction on the new headquarters started last January and the company began the first phase of moving in August. The company received tax incentives from the city of Kansas City, KS for the move.

David Launder is CEO of Independent Electric. His grandfather, John Launder, founded the company. Independent Electric is an electric equipment supplier and rewinds electric motors. The company employs about 45 people at its headquarters and has seven branch locations in Kansas and Missouri.

Neither construction costs nor tax incentive amounts were disclosed. Pat McGannon, a broker with J.P. Fogel & Co., advised the company on whether to build a new facility or whether to retrofit an existing structure.

Independent Electric sold its headquarters and two smaller buildings to Custom Color Corp. Custom Color, a photo and electronic imaging company, and is working on a plan that will renovate a six-block area. Custom Color has asked for Tax Increment Financing to turn the industrial and warehouse facilities into residential lofts and space for small businesses. The Freight House District is reportedly becoming very popular with artists and photographers.
