WAYNE, NJ-C&S Wholesale Grocers’ $301.8 million bid for most of the assets of the bankrupt Grand Union supermarket chain was the winner at a court-ordered bankruptcy auction. The amount was the same the Brattleboro, VT-based wholesaler offered in a signed purchase agreement last week, but the auction was required because of Grand Union’s Chapter XI status. About two dozen interested parties participated in the auction, but no one equaled C&S bid.

C&S will acquire 185 of Grand Union’s 197 stores, plus a distribution center in Upstate New York. At its peak, the chain had 900 stores from Canada to Florida along the East Coast, and west to Texas. But tough times and three trips to bankruptcy court melted that down to less than 200 units, all in the Northeast.

The sale still requires approval of FTC antitrust regulators and Federal Bankruptcy Court in Newark. Both are expected.
