SAN JOSE, CA-The Calpine Corp. and development partner Bechtel Enterprises this week offered the city of San Jose, Calif., a $10 million incentive should their debated power plant be approved. The offer comes just days before the city is slated to vote on the plant. That vote is scheduled for Tuesday.

In a letter to Mayor Ron Gonzales and the San Jose City Council, Calpine says the $10 million in electricity discounts would be spread out over five years. Those discounts would be applicable to low-income residents, the city, or Cisco Systems’ proposed new Coyote Valley Research Park.

Cisco has openly battled the prospect of Calpine locating near its new campus in Coyote Valley, saying that the industrial use of the 600-megawatt power plant does not blend with the light-industrial use of an office park.

Gonzales and other council members have spoken openly against the plant as well, and local advocacy group Santa Teresa Citizens Action Group has said the plant poses health concerns to neighbors because of the presence of pollution-controlling aqueous ammonia. The ammonia is extremely hazardous if released into the air.
