ORLANDO-The often-controversial Economic Development Commission of Mid-Florida Inc. must be doing a few things right because local businesses are pledging a total $2.6 million over the next four years. The EDC competes with other Florida sectors and states to attract new companies, including commercial real estate firms, to Central Florida.

The $2.6 million commitment tops the aggregate $2.05 million that is coming from the city of Orlando and Orange, Seminole, Lake and Osceola counties. That’s the first time in 30 years private money has exceeded public doles.

The EDC plans to add two employees, increasing its staff to 34. The promotional agency is bullish on the area’s growing high-tech sector, pitching that category hard to out-of-state corporations.
