WAYNE, NJ–The saga of Grand Union continues. A bankruptcy court has overseen the sale at auction of the troubled supermarketer to C&S Wholesale of Brattleboro, VT for $301.8 million, but A&P is challenging that auction in court, charging that the bidding process was rigged. Other bankruptcy-related issues remain, but if it all clears, C&S already has a good idea of what it wants to do with its acquisition.

For openers, C&S’s deal is for 185 of the 197 existing Grand Union supermarkets. Of those, the company plans to run 84 under the Grand Union name, and find buyers for the rest. As many as a half-dozen retailers are said to be in the hunt for the stores, including Stop & Shop and Tops Markets, both owned by Dutch-based Royal Ahold; Shaws, owned by UK-based J. Sainsbury; Price Chopper; Pathmark; and Hannaford.

Operating the 84 stores would mark C&S Wholesale’s initial entry into the retail arena.
