Burnham Pacific's Open Air Mall Filling Back Up

FREMONT, CA-The Fremont Hub, which lost some tenants to a competing mall across Interstate 880, is again attracting national tenants following a $20 million makeover by its San Diego-based owner. The complex is now 70% leased.

FREMONT, CA-The Fremont Hub is once again a shopping destination. The Hub, located off Interstate 880 across the freeway from the NewPark Mall, has been given a $20 million renovation by owner/developer Burnham Pacific. The San Diego-based mall REIT bought the 658,000-sf center in 1997 and is now reaping the rewards of the open-air market’s repositioning.

A shopping destination for more than three decades, the Hub had fallen into disrepair by the time Burnham Pacific picked it up as a value-add opportunity. A couple of the mall’s previous anchor tenants – Mervyns and Old Navy – left in favor of the NewPark Mall across the freeway, but they are being backfilled by Home-furnishings store Pier 1 Imports and restaurant New Tung Kee Noodle House, among others. The complex is now 70% leased, says Burnham.
