MIAMI- FPL is asking the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission to approve its 28-year-old Turkey Point nuclear power plant for another 20 years, until 2032. The utility’s initial licenses expire beginning in 2012 after 40 years of operation. Turkey Point is about 10 miles east of Florida City and 20 miles south of Downtown on a point of land extending into Biscayne Bay.

Having overcome problems with the NRC in the late 1980s, FPL spent $237 million in upgrades in 1990. The plant withstood the eye of Hurricane Andrew’s Category 4 force winds in 1992 and has had positive evaluations since, according to published reports. The application approval process will likely take two years to complete.

Public comment on the license extension application ends Dec. 22. Environmental and nuclear activist concerns have surfaced, as have worries of surrounding residents about the current 800 employees and continuing the $60-million benefit to the community.
