New Sunroof Plant Planned for Detroit

DETROIT - ArvinMeritor is building a plant and technical center at Rademacher and Fort streets, marking a return to the city of Detroit after over a quarter-century's absence.

DETROIT – The sunroof maker ArvinMeritor is coming back to Detroit by building a 150,000-sf plant and technical center in one of the city’s Renaissance Zones. The company moved plants out of Detroit in 1974. “We’re just happy for the opportunity to get back into the city,” says Sam Lacricchio of the company. He said he could not reveal costs of construction, as plans are still being worked on with the City.

The 10-acre campus at Rademacher and Fort streets should be open by summer, he says. About 500 employees will work at the plant and the tech center on sales, marketing, engineering and manufacturing. Southwestern High School is next to the property, and will benefit from a company outreach program, Lacricchio notes.
