HOLYOKE, MA-John S. Lane and Sons tentatively agrees to buy 400 acres here, including the former Mount Tom Ski Area. The family-owned company is talking to state officials about selling part of the property to the State Department of Environmental Management.

Hank Lane, president of the 110-year old, family-owned business, tells GlobeSt.com that his company has no interest in redeveloping the ski area, which has been closed since 1998. “We have been interested in this area for a while,” he says. “It suits our needs.” Lane and Sons started as a quarry business and the company now has five plants in the state. There is a small, existing quarry on this parcel and Lane says that his company is talking about a reclamation project.

While Lane would not disclose the purchase price, he says that he has talked with state officials about selling a portion of the property to the state Department of Environmental Management. “It is a sensitive area environmentally,” he says. “This mountaintop is a signature of the Pioneer Valley.” The state has a 1,800-acre park on the mountain.
