FERNDALE, MI-An owner of a tattoo parlor franchise has sued the board of zoning appeals here for not allowing him to lease space to operate along Woodward Avenue, about a mile north of the northern Detroit border of Eight Mile Road. The city used a 1989 ordinance that classifies the parlor as an “adultbusiness.”

Almost 20 years ago, the area along Woodward was becoming seedy, according to Councilman Craig Covey, and the ordinance was created a few years later. According to the ordinance, all adult businesses must stay at least 1,000 feet away from each other. The owner of Inkslingers Tattoo Parlors wants to open up his shop across the street from a Priscilla’s lingerie and adult novelty shop.

The suit is before Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Edward Sosnick. A motion will be heard in his court sometime in early July.
