SAN DIEGO-Starbucks is adding one more store to its stable of 67 in San Diego County.

Despite neighborhood opposition, the new coffee shop is to open on Newport Avenue at Bacon Street in Ocean Beach. A group of neighbors has been fighting the move since May, fearing the loss of the small-town character and the effect on locally owned businesses. The area used to be known has a counter-culture haven in the 1960s.

Opposition leaders have won the support of Charles Roberts, chairman of the Ocean Beach Planning Board. The planning board wrote a letter to Starbucks asking the corporation not to come to Ocean Beach.

The Ocean Beach Town Council hasn’t yet taken a position on the Starbucks issue.
