DENVER-The House of Blues isn’t singing the blues about its planned music club on Larimer Square, despite rumors that the property is too expensive and won’t pencil out. ”At present we are exclusively looking at Larimer Square as the future location of a House of Blues club venue in Denver,” says Liam Thornton, senior vice president of development at HOB Entertainment Inc.

”Admittedly, the proposed site has significant challenges and we are working through with them with Larimer Square and the city,” Thornton adds.

HOB has been working to build its new club on the site of the former Champion Brewery restaurant in Larimer Square, a historic district next to Lower Downtown. Larimer Square, saved from the wrecking ball by Denver developer Dana Crawford about 30 years ago, was one of the first historic redevelopments in Denver.

Today, it is one of the most expensive retail spots in the Denver area.

”House of Blues has been actively working toward making this club a reality for the past eight months,” says Joe Vostrejs, general manager of Larimer Square. ”They have exciting plans for the location and we look forward to seeing them through to fruition.”

In October of last year, House of Blues announced plans for the club, which would include a restaurant, 1,200- to 1,500-seat music hall and retail space.

The company still plans to open it in late 2003.

If successful, it would join 85,000 sf of offices and 115,000 sf of retail and restaurants at Larimer Square. Tenants at Larimer Square include Ann Taylor, Z Gallerie, Tamayo Restaurant and the Samba Room.
