DENVER-Twenty-two undergraduate and graduate students from around the world have come to the former Stapleton International Airport to help determine the best place for a light rail station and its design. They also will help determine the best way to preserve nearby prairie grass.

The students are participating in the 21st Summer Student Program sponsored by EDAW. EDAW is a San Francisco-based environmental planning, landscape architecture, urban design and economic development firm.

The SSP internship program was started by landscape architect Herb Schaal in 1980, but this is the first time it has been in Denver. The program costs $120,000 and EDAW foots about half the bill, with donations coming from groups such as Forest City, developer of Stapleton, and the Regional Transportation District.

Students in the program come from Poland, Honduras, Australia, Japan, England, China, Indonesia, and the US.

”Coming from Poland, the balance between nature and residential development is of particular concern to me,” says Kaiser Bourlatchka, one of the students. ”As my country is under increasing development pressures, I can easily see opportunities to learn from these experiences that I can take home with me.”

Bourlatchka also studied in France and London, and plans to contrast the European style of development with what she learns in Denver.
