ORANGE COUNTY, CA-Opponents of turning the closed El Toro Marine Base into a commercial airport are circulating yet another petition to stop the project, after the first two had to be scuttled over confusing language and possible loopholes.

The latest measure is called the Central Park and Nature Preserve Initiative. Its backers hope to get enough signatures to get the measure on next March’s ballot.

The initiative would take away the former Marine base’s longtime zoning for airport use. Instead, it would be rezoned for park use only.

Airport foes have circulated two similar proposals in recent months. Though each garnered several thousand signatures, the petitioners themselves tore them up after finding technical flaws that left them open to court challenges.
