ARDMORE, PA-Although some property owners around the country are having difficulty leasing shuttered movie theaters and others are considering demolishing them, the Ardmore Theater here, approximately seven miles from Philadelphia, will once again be welcoming patrons soon. This time they will be health enthusiasts rather than movie fans, however. Philadelphia Sports Clubs has a signed a long-term lease for the facility at 34 West Lancaster Ave. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Vacant for more than a year after United Artists Cinema closed it, the 25,000-sf building is scheduled to open early next year. Local architect Dick Winston of Becker Winston was hired by Philadelphia Sports Clubs to retain the architectural features of the 1920s structure during renovations.

This will make the sixth facility operated by the fitness company, which is owned by Town Sport International, based in New York. It operates New York Sports Club, Washington Sports Clubs and Boston Sports Clubs with more than 100 locations and over 300,000 members in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region.
