VALLEJO, CA-The California Energy Commission has approved a $2.5 million grant to build a solar micro-utility in Vallejo. The facility will be one of the largest of its kind in the country and is expected to save the city hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Vallejo city officials were informed this week that the CEC had approved $2.5 million of the $3.75 million request. The remaining $1.25 million will be available when construction is complete. Officials say that construction will be complete by the end of the year.

The city is building the solar plant with BP Solar, with which it will split electricity sales’ revenue. Electricity generation can start while the plant is being constructed.

Mark Mazzaferro, Public Information Officer for the city of Vallejo, tells GlobeSt.com the facility will be built on a 40-acre property that formerly belonged to Kaiser Permanente. It is estimated that the solar facility will take up about 10 acres of land. It will be located on the corner of Sonoma Boulevard and Mair Island Way in Vallejo.

Mazzaferro said that the location is ideal because it is city-owned property that has been stagnant for years and has no future plans.

“We finally have a way to utilize the property, save money and make money,” he said. “We’re spending half a million dollars a year at City Hall, using half a megawatt of power. The solar plant will generate about one megawatt, of which we can put half on the grid for other properties.”
