NEW YORK CITY-A two-stage, national design competition is being held to find an architect for a planned expansion of the Queens Museum of Art, founded in 1972. The current museum is housed in the New York City Building, the only surviving structure from both the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs. Successful competitors will capitalize on the open space of the building’s southern half and the dramatic opportunities afforded by the historic site.

The expansion of the building will effectively double the museum’s size from 45,000 sf to approximately 100,000 sf. The city hopes that the development of this free-span central space will allow the museum to become a player in the fast-paced contemporary art world. The space must be readily adaptable for any art medium as well as a variety of audiences and programming.

Competitors will submit their concept in the first stage of the competition, and the jury will select five competitors. Each will receive an honorarium to produce more detailed plans in the second stage.

By the second stage, all teams must include one individual licensed to practice architecture in New York State. City officials as well as representatives from Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Scogin, Elam & Bray will sit on the competition jury. Registration is due by July 16.
