SEATTLE-A sluggish economy didn’t stop the shopping faithful from buying at Nordstrom stores last month, the locally based, 100-year-old company reports this week.

Sales at stores that have been open for at least one year jumped 1.4% from 2000. Preliminary year-to-date sales of $2.2 billion increased 5.4 percent compared to 2000 year-to-date sales of $2.1 billion. Year-to-date same-store sales declined 2.2 percent.

“We are pleased with the results of our June Men’s and Women’s Half-Yearly clearance events, particularly in light of the challenging retail environment,” Blake Nordstrom, company president, said in a prepared statement. “The women’s sale generated a stronger response than the men’s sale. Both events improved over last year and significantly drove our positive top-line results.”

After adjusting for calendar differences, total June sales increased 5.6 percent, while same-store sales rose 0.4 percent, Nordstrom said.
