FERNDALE, MI-A petition by about 50 residents has encouraged the city council todeny a request to build a gasoline station and convenience store on the corner of Woodward Avenue and Oakridge Street, just north of the Detroit border. The land owner, Abbas Harajli of Dearborn, says the site could bring in more than $150,000 a month in just gasoline sales along the busy avenue.

However residents convinced the council the proposed land use would detract from the desirability of residential and business uses in the area. The council unanimously denied a special land use approval. One of the petition signers was a Mobil station owner, who says he didn’t want competition so close to his store less than a mile from the site.
