LOS ANGELES-A union local is calling on construction unions across the US to boycott items made by Philips Products, following the window-making giant’s decision to close a Southern California plant and fire all 230 of the facility’s workers rather than give in to a series of demands by union officials.

The plant is in the Inland Empire community of Rancho Cucamonga. Local 848 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters had been on strike at the plant for two months.

The strike began after officials from Indiana-based Philips refused the union’s request to pay 100% of the cost of a new health plan instead of 75%, and to increase the number of paid sick days. Most of the workers make about $9 an hour, according to a union spokesman, and are also seeking an increase of about 35 cents an hour.

The Rancho Cucamonga plant makes doors and windows for manufactured homes, other types of prefabricated buildings, and for recreational vehicles. It will close Sept. 9.

Eric Tate, the union’s business agent, says he’ll ask the Teamsters to approve a nationwide boycott of goods made by Philips Products. The company has six other facilities across the country.
