ATLANTA-Local architects Chris Goode, Paul Van Slyke and their five-year-old Goode Van Slyke architecture firm are survivors in a commercial real estate arena where a sound bottom line isn’t always generated by high-profile projects.

With $175.25 million worth of commercial work representing 1.87 million sf now on their drawing boards, Goode and Van Slyke are beginning to focus on health care, the private sector and religious facility development as new revenue generators.

Church work especially “never seems to be impacted by rising and falling economy issues,” Goode tells GlobeSt.com.

For example, the firm is working on two multifamily residential projects for Atlanta-based H.J. Russell & Co, the largest minority owned developer-builder in the United States. The jobs are an $11.6 million renovation of the 580-unit, 497,217-sf Allen Temple Apartment, Atlanta and the $3.8 million, 195,624-sf renovation of 190 units at Bethel Church Homes in Athens, GA, 60 miles northeast of Downtown Atlanta.

“The office market seems to be softening with the exception of some Midtown activity,” Van Slyke tells GlobeSt.com. “Public work remains strong and even if private work slows, we are interested in striking a balance between the two.”

Two schools the firm designed are now under construction and expected to be completed this fall in time for a winter opening. They are the 1,000-student, 95,000-sf, $10.7 million Wynbrooke Elementary in nearby DeKalb County and the 900-student, 157,200-sf, $12-million Price Middle School in Atlanta.

The firm’s largest project to date is the $34-million Downtown Northyards Business Park. The 275,000-sf park is a public-private partnership being constructed on the site of an historic railroad roundhouse. “It will feature high-tech office space and uniquely-designed outdoor gathering places,” Goode tells GlobeSt.com.

On the educational front, Goode Van Slyke is designing the $14.7 million, 235,000-sf New Student Success Center at Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, GA, in association with the Richard + Wittschiebe firm.

Completed high-education facilities include a dozen Board of Regents projects, such as the award-winning $14-million, 108,000-sf Health, Physical Education and Recreation Facility at Albany State University; and the $12.4-million, 85,000-sf Resident Hall at Savannah State University.

The versatile team also designed the 5,000-sf, $234,000 Northside Hospital’s Women’s Health Center nearing completion from a May ground-breaking; and the 44,000-sf, $8.5 million Dorothy C. Benson Senior Multipurpose Complex in north Fulton County.

Like most architectural firms, Goode Van Slyke yearns to be ranked among the industry leaders some day. But more importantly, senior partner Goode tells GlobeSt.com, “we want to improve the environment we all share.”
