BOSTON-Where the Red Sox will eventually build their home is still anybody’s guess but more and more sites are being floated around as potential homes for the local baseball team. The latest site reportedly being considered is right next to South Station here.

At one time, the only question regarding the Sox was who would be its new owners. But now that the $665-million plan to build a ballpark right near Fenway Park appears to be going nowhere, potential team owners are scrambling to come up with other options for a new ballpark.

The 15-acre site near South Station owned by the US Postal Service currently houses a mail-sorting plant. The Postal Service has been exploring the possibility of relocating elsewhere but has yet to receive approval for the move.

Other sites currently under consideration for a include a one along the waterfront here in South Boston on a 25-acre parcel owned by developer Frank McCourt, who has been aggressively campaigning among potential bidders to have his property considered. A beleaguered racetrack in East Boston in which Joseph O’Donnell–one of the bidders for the team–already holds a large ownership stake, is also being considered as is a swath of state-owned land near the Reserved Channel in South Boston. Ironically, this was the site on which the New England Patriots proposed building a new football stadium, an idea that was shot down because of fierce local opposition.
