HOUSTON-Oakbrook, IL-based DeVry Institutes is readying plans for its Houston inroad, closing on 17 acres in the Wolff Cos.’ 150-acre Westway Park. The leading tech school is eyeing a 2002 groundbreaking for a 100,000-sf campus.

Westway Park is situated at the intersection of Sam Houston Tollway and Clay Road. Stephen Schneidau of Cushman & Wakefield of Texas Inc.’s Houston office represented DeVry. Schneidau tells GlobeSt.com that DeVry Institute of Technology campus is looking for a 2003 completion. Schneidau says DeVry chose Westway Park “because it is the best business park on the Beltway.” DeVry wanted Beltway visibility and easy access for students, says Schneidau, and this property is located at the best interchange of Interstate 10 and Texas 290.

The West Houston development is bustling with activity these days. Cooper Cameron is building a 215,000-sf divisional headquarters at the park. Last year’ completion, the 130,000-sf Concourse Building, is now 100% occupied. David W. Hightower, Wolff’s executive vice president, says the park has only 18 acres remaining.

DeVry, a nationally recognized name in technology education, also owns a campus in Irving, TX. “Because DeVry’s degree program offerings are in technology-related fields, we look to located our campuses within high-tech corridors,” says Ken Rutkowski, DeVry vice president of facilities and operations. Rutkowski says the “Techway” as some are calling that stretch of the Sam Houston Tollway offers the kind of proximity to the high- tech community that DeVry requires in its site selection process.

Rutkowski says Westway Park’s infrastructure is ideally suited to DeVry’s needs for sophisticated telecommunications and networking that “we need to develop computer labs and smart classrooms.” And that, adds Hightower, is just what park planners had in mind when the high-tech groundwork was laid.
