SAN FRANCISCO-The Metropolitan Transportation Commission is handing out $18 million to 21 Bay Area cities to improve coordination between transportation and land use. Half of the $18 million will fund the Housing Incentive Program of 15 cities, which will provide cities with incentives to build compact housing near transit locations.

“With the high cost of housing and traffic congestion ranking at the top of Bay Area concerns, we believe this is a step in the right direction,” said MTC Chair Sharon Brown. “The $9 million we are providing to 15 Bay Area cities will encourage them to develop transit-oriented housing for more than 10,000 residents.”

HIP funds were awarded to the cities of Dublin and Vallejo on the sites of two new housing developments that will be built near transportation.

Dublin is planning to build a mixed-use housing, office and retail development near the BART station. As an incentive, MTC will provide a $1.3 million HIP grant for the city to use for pedestrian and transit-friendly projects. Dublin will also receive a $750,000 TLC capital grant for a pedestrian plaza at BART.

Vallejo received a $382,000 grant to use for a transit plaza at the Sereno Bus Transit Center. Vallejo recently approved development of Sereno Village Apartments, which consists of 125 affordable apartment units, a shopping center and bus hub.
