DENVER-The city made a short list for a builder of a big project — the $268-million doubling of the size of the Colorado Convention Center. The four general contractor finalists are PCL Construction Services Inc. of Denver; M.A. Mortenson Co. of Minneapolis; Hensel Phelps of Greeley, CO; and Turner Construction of Dallas.

Turner Construction is building the new $400.8-million Invesco Field at Mile High football stadium. PCL built the new $92.7-million federal courthouse in Downtown Denver. Mortenson built the Coors Field baseball stadium and the Pepsi Center, where the Colorado Avalanche and the Denver Nuggets play. Hensel Phelps built the original convention center.

The two that didn’t make the list were the Clark Construction Group Inc. of Bethesda, MD, the contractor in charge of the $675-million expansion ofChicago’s convention center; and Kiewit Construction Co., a division ofOmaha-based Peter Kiewit Sons’ Inc. Kiewit is building the so-called T-Rexproject in Colorado — the $1.6-billion Interstate 25 expansion and light railproject.

The new convention center will include an additional 300,000 sf of exhibition space, 60,000 sf of meeting rooms and a 5,000-seat auditorium.

The selection committee comprised of representatives from various city agencies, the Downtown Denver Partnership, and the Denver Metro VisitorsBureau.

The city plans to have a general contract under contract by October.
