FRESNO, CA-The University of California, San Francisco-Fresno medical center is receiving $26 million from the state to build a high-tech medical education and research center in Fresno – the first of its kind in the Central Valley. Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2002 and expected to be complete by January 2004.

UCSF plans to construct a 60,000 SF medical education and facility center in downtown Fresno that will house all residents, medical faculty and staff. The center will feature telemedicine and various methods of standardized patient care, in addition to an outdoor, wireless amphitheatre.

Cara Douglas, director public affairs for the university, tells GlobeSt.com that the proposal has been in the works for at least three years. The university had to conduct studies and get approval locally before the plan was proposed to the state.

“The impact on UCSF is great,” said Douglas. “We are currently the only school providing doctors to the valley, and over 50% of doctors trained here stay in the area. Fresno’s medical facility secures the livelihood of physicians provided to the valley community in the future.”

“This building represents state-of-the-art, cutting-edge technology,” she adds. “We’ll be able to practice telemedicine and will have physicians coming in from all over the world.”
