DETROIT-GM Powertrain, a division of the General Motors Corp., recently broke ground on a second engineering facility on the GM Pontiac North Campus. The project is part of a major upgrade to the campus and includes landscaping, parking, road and other improvements.

General Motors awarded the design/build contract for the 435,000-sf GM Powertrain Headquarters to Ideal Contracting, a minority-owned construction firm based in Detroit.

Barton Malow will mentor Ideal Contracting. Barton Malow Design will provide architectural services for the headquarters building. Ideal Steel is the steel subcontractor, with Barton Malow self-performing interior and concrete trade work.

In addition to employee offices, the building will feature a full-service conference center, cafeteria, fitness center, library, and meeting rooms.

The “town square,” a place for employees to gather, marks the center of the complex. The Powertrain Headquarters will be joined to existing GM buildings by a second-floor walkway. Owner occupancy is scheduled for early 2003.

When completed, approximately 1,200 engineers and support staff will move to the four-story facility. Most will be moving from the Powertrain Warren Engineering Center, located on the Warren Tech Center Campus. The new Pontiac facility will allow GM to consolidate most of its engineering and pre-production operations on the Pontiac North Campus.

The project is part of GM’s $2-billion Southeast Michigan Campus Plan to upgrade and consolidate GM engineering facilities across the region. The Southeast Michigan Campus Plan is designed to afford GM lower structural costs through consolidation of engineering activities and fewer facilities.

Since 1997, GM has reduced its facility space in Southeast Michigan by nearly 5 million sf.
