OLYMPIA, WA-Elected officials will consider six amendments to the city’s comprehensive plan this week as City Council members make their annual review of the growth blueprint. One of those proposals includes changes to urban waterfront building height requirements, which can be higher based on a project’s open space development.

For instance, in areas along West Bay Drive where a developer who donates park and trail space on the parcel, the building may rise as high as 65 feet and include four stories. Take that same parcel, but the developer donates park space, the building could be as high as three stories and as tall as 42 feet.

View blockage allowed also increases with the amount of land earmarked for open space. Planners say the sliding scale is an effort to appease interested parties with varied opinions on development.

Other changes up for review include:

– The addition of a low-impact development zone for the Green Cove Creek basin

– Simplifying the city’s zoning code by changing certain designations

– Removing a proposed connection between 12th and 15th avenues from Thurston County’s transportation plans

The council will consider these options Tuesday and is expected to make a final decision on the comprehensive plan amendments next week.
