SAN DIEGO-Some 46% of companies are inclined to hire more people for the October through December period while 7% are preparing for fewer personnel, according to a poll of workforce plans among employers for the final months of the year released today by Manpower Inc.

Another 46% will maintain current staffing levels and 1% have not finalized their projections, according to Phil Blair, president of the San Diego Manpower Inc. office. Blair added that labor market was flourishing at the end of 2000, when 68% anticipated adding workers and 15% intended to cut back.

The outlook was excellent three months ago, as 48% issued recruitment plans and 4% reported reductions were in order. In the fourth quarter, employment opportunities are expected in construction, transportation/public utilities, wholesale/retail trade, finance/insurance/real estate, education and public administration. The outlook is mixed in durable and non-durable goods manufacturing and services.
