HOUSTON-The plan to unify the Houston and Galveston ports has met with intense questioning in a series of public workshops held by various entities in Galveston. Both port authorities have OK’d the merger, but a vote is outstanding from Galveston City Council.

A Port of Houston Authority source tells GlobeSt.com that the decision to open the issue up for public discussion before the council vote has spawned serious questions for teams from both authorities. The source says citizens’ primary point of contention has been what they say is a lack of information about the terms. A term sheet with a basic outline of the merger is available, but a more costly full-blown report has not been conducted. The source says such a report would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to prepare and countless man-hours. “People seem to want all of the details,” says the source, “not just the framework.” The source says that unresolved questions will be “resolved to the benefit of both ports” as the deal progresses.
