ANNE ARUNDEL, MD-Work has begun on an 8,400-space parking garage at the Baltimore-Washington International Airport. The $140 million project will ultimately lead to demolishing the current headquarters of the Maryland Department of Transportation.

A joint venture of Clark/Gilford ERG is the general contractor on the facility, which is part of a planned $1.8-billion capital improvement plan for BWI. The parking garage will be built in two phases, a spokeswoman at Clark told GlobeSt.com. The first phase of 3,000 spaces should be completed by November 2002.

At that point, MDOT’s headquarters would be torn down to make way for the remaining 5,400 spaces. The Clark spokeswoman was not certain if MDOT had selected a knew site, and she said when the plan was announced much earlier this year, they had not determined to buy or build.

But over the summer, MDOT has said that it would reside in a new 85,000-sf building to be developed by the Maryland Economic Development Corp. MDOT has agreed to a 20-year lease, and it said the new headquarters would be just off Route 170, within walking distance to the BWI light rail station, served by Amtrak and the state’s MARC rail.
