ASHLAND, OR-A former timber mill in Ashland is being eyed for a transit-oriented planned community, an Ashland city planner confirms for GloebSt.com. The property is a 65-acre former mill on the southern end of the city that has been dormant since 1997.

The would-be developer of the so-called Crowman Mill is Galpin LLC, a group of developers from Medford. They, group has an option to purchase the property, but still have a lot to do, says associate planner Mark Knox. “This is so preliminary that the ball is still in their court,” says Knox, explaining that an environmental review, a zone change and a comprehensive plan amendment — let alone a building permit — are just a few of the things that must occur before the “Kaufman Crossing” moves forward.

As conceptually envisioned, the development would hold a mix of housing, retail and employment that would connect with the city via the existing rail lines that used to haul lumber on and off the site. If all goes smoothly, it’s possible the project could begin as early as next year with grading and infrastructure work. The development would then take several years to build out.
