ORANGE COUNTY, CA-With the Sept. 17 vote on the El Toro airport proposal drawing near, it looks as though the Orange County Board of Supervisors may approve a smaller sized project than what was originally anticipated. This smaller airport would serve 18.8 million passengers a year instead of the initially planned 28.8 million.

As the final public hearing on the El Toro proposal wrapped up yesterday, Chairwoman Cynthia Coad requested that the board be presented with two possibilities for the airport on September 17th, one that would accommodate 28.8 million passengers by 2020 and the other that would allow for 18.8 million passengers by 2010. Several pro-airport organizations have said they would support a smaller airport, and the Orange County Business Council has also backed the proposal for 18.8 million passengers.

Coad has long supported a smaller airport, but now it seems that she has the support of the other two pro-airport supervisors, as they spoke in favor of the new proposal after yesterday’s hearing. It is expected that the planned airport will be approved at the meeting later this month.
