SACRAMENTO, CA-Planning for Sacramento’s largest business park are accelerating as the threat of a new runway wiping out or shrinking the project begins to increase.

Sacramento County sees the 1,886-acre business park, in the works for 20 years now, as a major source of tax income. The county approved the project in 1993, and the developers are eager to begin construction, possibly in the next few months, which may have something to do with Sacramento International Airport’s proposal to build a third runway for international flights-right on the property.

The Metro Air Park is slated to include 20 million sf of office and industrial space, 950 hotel rooms, and an 18-hole golf course. Its developers, Buzz Oates, Frank Ramos, James Lennane and Robert Patillo, are part of a group of 22 ownership groups totaling some 140 individuals.

Airport officials say that a third runway in this space would be the best way to build the airport so it can meet the travel demand projected for Sacramento over the next 20 years. The property is east of the airport and would be the easiest way to expand the airport.

Metro Air Port developers say that proposals to build an eastern runway are severely threatening their project. One of the proposals would wipe the project out completely, while a second would affect 25% of the development.

The developers have been told by the Sacramento Board of Supervisors that the project will not be affected by the proposed runways, so they plan to carry on as planned. This may be a good idea, as airport officials are trying to have the project postponed. The airport representative says that of all proposals to build an international runway, the eastern runway proposals are the most problem-free, and will help build the airport as an international hub.
